Denis Maurey is a visual artist and furniture designer born in Bordeaux, in 1962. He studied at the ‘Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts et des Arts Decoratifs’.
At only 17, he had his first exhibitions of painting and sculptures at the galleries ‘Salon des Arts de Pessac’ and the ‘Village medieval de la Hume’ (Arcachon) in 1979. He also studied classical French furniture with the Master craftsman Michel Barbot, before creating new styles and concepts of design.
Notable pieces including his ‘Styl’YZ’ which was exhibited at the ‘Entrepôt Lainé’ (CAPC) in Bordeaux, filmed by Jean de Giacinto and Claire Marillier at the BDX gallery for the ‘FIFARC’ ( Festival International du Film d’Architecture) in 1987.
He also designed furniture and an interior used by the ‘Faucon Maltais’, bar and concert hall in Talence.
Denis Maurey was a member of ADA ( Action de Designers Associés) with Eric Raffy, Marc Antoine Florin, Xavier Lagurgue, Jean Eric Rose… that created ground breaking pieces of furniture and lighting which have been shown in Bordeaux, Limoges, Toulouse…
A number of long stays in Los Angeles, with its large scale grid plan, proved to be inspirational. In LA Denis Maurey found a melting pot of cultural diversity and creativity combined with the constant apprehention that comes from living on the San Andreas Fault.
In his search for new themes, mediums, and implementations, Denis Maurey has become driven by a desire to ‘conquer space’ both physically and visually.
Today his sculptural work seems to be animated by a perpetual motion through the fusion of space, time and energy.
Denis Maurey is currently living and working in Lévignac de Guyenne in the South West of France.
